The Anointed One is
destined to be descended from Shäma’s descendant Ebar. But
Sanlæm, the ancient foe of men, seeks to cut off Shäma’s
line, first by sending his giant sons to ravage the Earth and then by
inciting the Sons of Cænor, Shäma’s wicked brother,
to war against the Sons of Shäma. Already hostilities have been
springing up between the descendants of the two brothers – the
Sons of Shäma faithfully multiply and explore new lands, while
the Sons of Cænor remain in the East and build cities to make
themselves great. But now, the Sons of Cænor have joined with
the Sons of Sanlæm to destroy the Sons of Shäma and kill
Ebar and his children. Knowing from the beginning that Sanlæm
would eventually try to destroy him, Ebar sent his firstborn, infant
son, Rókar, away with a good giant named Tanangil to the far
West. But after the rest of Ebar’s children have grown up and
are slain by Sanlæm, the Sons of Shäma gather to protect
Ebar, not knowing of his son Rókar. One of the Sons of Shäma,
a brave youth named Artam of Rendúil, is the victim of
treachery: in a skirmish with the Sons of Cænor, a Son of Shäma
seems to be willing to sacrifice himself to help the others escape.
His plan is to run to the nearby forest while Artam’s father
and another distract the enemies and the rest make their escape. But
he proves his betrayal by not luring the enemy to himself and instead
running away. Artam’s father and his companion are both slain
by the Sons of Cænor. Artam vows to protect the ancestors of
the Anointed One and, along with a few of his companions and a cursed
Son of Limuel, sets off to try and carry away Ebar and hide him. In
the end, the armies of are defeated for a time, but Ebar is slain.
